According to officials in northern Burkina Faso, over 60 civilians were murdered in the town of Karma, near the border with Mali.

A local prosecutor claimed he learned about the incident on Friday and that it was carried out by persons dressed in army clothes. He has requested information.

According to survivors, over 100 individuals on motorcycles and pick-up trucks assaulted the community.

An attack on Burkinabe army and volunteer troops occurred in the same location, near Ouahigouya, earlier last week, killing roughly 40 people and injuring more than 30.

Since Islamist extremists began operating in the area in 2015, many have been slain.

The administration has already announced plans to recruit 5,000 more soldiers to combat the insurgency that has seized the nation since 2015.

Burkina's interim president, Captain Ibrahim Traore, has proclaimed a goal of recapturing the 40% of the country's territory seized by jihadists.

According to non-governmental humanitarian organizations, the violence has killed over 10,000 people and displaced two million more.

Anger within the military at the rising toll triggered two coups in 2022, the most recent of which occurred in September, when Traore took control.
