Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande visited the university to dedicate two new buildings.
He dedicated 2,700-bed off-campus housing and a new education building on campus.
His visit, however, was hampered by student demonstrations over a variety of concerns.
Protesting students attempted to prevent Nzimande's entourage from leaving the Unibell student residence.
They were complaining about a shortage of water during load shedding and problems with their internet connection.
Mandla Notyawa, president of the UWC SRC, stated that the institution should also provide shuttle services for students to and from campus.
This place is not safe - students are being mugged every day, and nothing is being done to address that particular issue.
UWC Vice-Chancellor Professor Tyrone Pretorius, on the other hand, stated that they were trying to resolve these concerns.
"As with every infrastructure project, there will be a period of troubleshooting. We frequently discover issues that have not been appropriately addressed and rectify them."
Pretorius stated that they would continue to work with kids on any concerns.
The vice chancellor also criticized using excessive force by private security on students.
On Monday, the university hired private security to disperse protesting students outside the Unibell off-campus apartment with pellet guns.
Students replied with stones.
Tyrone Pretorius, rector and vice-chancellor of UWC, stated that the university condemns the excessive use of violence in a protest, whether by protestors or by police, and there was a large contingent of police.
