Tinyiko Mabunda from Athurstone outside Acornhoek, had always been interested in knitting and crocheting. During the Covid-19 pandemic, she turned her hobby into a successful business. As a Bachelor of Education student majoring in English, Life Orientation, and Xitsonga at the University of Limpopo, she was suddenly faced with the reality of a nationwide lockdown. With classes moved online, Tinyiko found herself with a lot of free time on her hands. She found solace in learning a new skill: crochet. Taught by her mother, who had her own decor and hair businesses, Tinyiko quickly discovered the therapeutic benefits of the craft. "Crocheting helped me deal with a lot because instead of stressing, I would resort to crocheting, which helped me get through COVID-19," she shares.
It wasn't long before Tinyiko's crocheted creations caught the attention of her friends and family. After posting photos of her work on Facebook, she was flooded with compliments and requests for custom pieces. Inspired by the positive feedback, Mabunda decided to turn her hobby into a business. She founded Vahlave Knits, which offers handmade crochet clothing items and accessories. The name "Vahlave Knits" comes from her Clan name "Mavunda" but also its after her love for her father.
Although Mabunda faced some challenges in starting her business, she persevered and has found success. Vahlave Knits has gained a following on social media, and Mabunda has even been featured in local news outlets for her entrepreneurial spirit and unique designs.

Vahlave Knits offers a wide range of crocheted items, including beanies, bikinis, tops, baby dresses, sweaters, and more. One of the standout pieces is the emerald green sweater, which is both cozy and stylish. In addition to clothing, Vahlave Knits also makes accessories such as bucket hats, headbands, and even crocheted men and women's sweaters. Whether you're looking for a unique item for yourself or a special gift for someone else, Vahlave Knits has something for everyone.
Tinyiko's future plans are to see her business grow and own a shop where she will employ unemployed youngsters and other unemployed people. She would also like to start a crocheting school where she can teach people how to crochet. "I think by doing that I’ll be developing my career since I’m studying for a bachelor of education. Now owning a crocheting school is one of the goals that I want to achieve," she says.
Tinyiko's story is a testament to the power of pursuing your passions and finding inspiration in unexpected places. During a challenging time, she found comfort and creativity in crocheting, and through dedication and hard work, she transformed her hobby into a thriving business.
