UN refugee chief calls for return to peacemaking to stem flows

The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) head, Filippo Grandi, has called for a return to peacemaking to curb the growing flow of refugees. With 110 million displaced people worldwide, the U.N. Security Council is broken and cannot agree on anything. Grandi believes that the world needs to restore its capacity to lead and drive peace to address these flows—a group of diplomats, former statesmen, and U.N.

Officials began seeking political backing for a peacemaking framework earlier this year to shape new standards for resolving conflicts. One of the drivers behind the higher numbers of refugees, including internally displaced individuals, is the conflict in Sudan, where rival military factions are battling each other. Donors pledged $1.5 billion to help Sudanese refugees at a conference, with some of the cash used to help 100,000 Sudanese refugees in neighbouring Chad. Grandi called for a more sustainable solution like a meaningful ceasefire and a multilateral approach to tackling the climate crisis.
