Police in the Ngaka Molema District are on high alert after the reported death of Chief Gopane Phillip Motuba (65) from Matshepe village, situated outside Mahikeng within the Lomanyaneng policing precinct. According to reports, Motuba was allegedly robbed and fatally attacked by two unidentified assailants who gained entry through an unlocked front door around 04:30 on Saturday, August 26, 2024.

Consequently, authorities are conducting an investigation into what is now deemed a case involving both robbery and murder.
Following this tragic event, several houses linked to a male villager suspected of involvement in the Chief's demise were set ablaze on Monday, August 28, 2023. Among these structures were those used by traditional healers (iizangoma) for training and consultations.

In addition to the arson incidents, two vehicles were deliberately set on fire, while a third sustained damage.

Furthermore, a local road connecting Mahikeng and Itsoseng was deliberately barricaded.

In response to these disturbances, the Mahikeng Public Order Police (POP) took action, apprehending 39 individuals, including 11 males and 28 females, among others, on charges related to public violence and disorder.

These arrests prompted members of the Matshepe community to gather at the Lomanyaneng police station, advocating for the release of the detained suspects.

However, the situation eventually calmed as the crowd dispersed. The suspects, whose ages range from 22 to 55, are anticipated to make their appearance before the Molopo Magistrates' Court in the near future.

The police are urging anyone who possesses information pertinent to the ongoing investigation to reach out to the Investigating Officer, Detective Warrant Officer Samuel Matiti, at 082 374 0498 or to contact the South African Police Service CrimeStop hotline at 08600 10111.
