POLOKWANE - Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, the Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, passionately called for united efforts against the escalating gender-based violence crisis in South Africa, citing shocking statistics. In the first three months of 2023, the nation recorded 1,0512 cases of rape, 1,485 attempted murders, 969 homicides, and over 15,000 assaults against women. These harrowing figures were reported by Daily Maverick. Additionally, the Western Cape Government disclosed a disturbing 48.3% increase in child murders, with reported alleged child abuse cases rising from 2,114 between January and March 2023 to 2,487 between April and June 2023 (source).
Speaking at a seminar held at the University of Limpopo on October 25, 2023, General Hadebe stressed the urgency of addressing this crisis collectively. The seminar, in collaboration with the University of Limpopo's School of Law, aimed at fostering dialogue and collaboration among attendees. Law enforcement officials, experts, and community leaders discussed the legal framework, societal dynamics, and challenges surrounding gender-based violence and child abuse.
Major General Lesiba Mashilo, Capricorn District Commissioner, Provincial CPF Chairperson Frans Kgasago, Provincial Youth Chairperson Kabelo Machete, and other key stakeholders supported the event. The experts highlighted the need for educational institutions to combat harmful cultural attitudes and harassment perpetuating these crimes.
General Hadebe urged for a paradigm shift, emphasizing a comprehensive societal approach spanning institutions of higher learning, households, workplaces, churches, and communities. The seminar also focused on implementing victim support initiatives, educating perpetrators about the consequences of their actions, and empowering victims to take appropriate steps after abuse.

General Hadebe acknowledged the severity of the situation, particularly with the spike in child murders, and reiterated the importance of collaborative efforts. Law enforcement officers conducted crime awareness campaigns in Mankweng, sensitizing the community about prevalent cases and encouraging reporting.
These initiatives have significantly raised awareness about gender-based violence and child abuse, particularly in anticipation of the upcoming 16 Days of Activism campaign against violence targeting women and children. The seminar underscored the need for immediate, concerted action to combat these alarming trends and protect the vulnerable members of society.
