Martina Trevisan defeated Jelena Ostapenko in the third round of the Miami Open on Monday.

Despite having only one seed between them, she strolled to a 6-3, 6-3 win over the favored No. 24 seed.

Trevisan has reached the final of a Grand Slam tournament and won at the WTA 250 level, but her most considerable success at the WTA 1000 level was reaching the third round in Guadalajara late last year.

Trevisan broke new ground with her 90-minute victory after defeating Ostapenko in her first match.

She was overjoyed to have defeated a former Grand Slam winner.

Trevisan is the first Italian to reach this level in singles in ten years. In 2013, Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci reached the last eight.

It means a lot because I never won a match here.

Match after match, I’m collecting experience that’s helping me a lot, especially in this type of match when you play against an essential player like Ostapenko. She has a lot of experience, more than me.

Trevisan has struggled to regain her best form since her epic run in Paris, and that effort has seen her win three matches in a row for the first time since her Roland Garros exploits.

Trailing 2-0 in the second set, Trevisan fought her way to victory by breaking Ostapenko thrice. She won five straight games, including a decisive five-down seventh game in which she fended off four break chances that would have put Ostapenko back on serve and in the match.

Another major winner could await Trevisan in the final eight of the Miami Open. There she will face the winner of the fourth-round match between Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina and Elise Mertens.

Later, Anastasia Potopova would defeat Chinese sensation Qinwen Zheng to advance to the Miami Open quarterfinals.

Potopova will now face third seed Jessica Pegula, who defeated her 'close friend' Magda Linette to advance to another WTA 1000 quarterfinal.
