Ian McIntosh, a former Springbok coach and Sharks star, has died.

McIntosh coached the Boks in 1993 and 1994 before joining the national selection committee. He was regarded as a football icon in Durban and KwaZulu-Natal, where he managed the Sharks in the 1980s and 1990s.

McIntosh, who had been diagnosed with cancer, died early Wednesday morning at an Umhlanga hospital.

On Wednesday morning, tributes from the South African rugby community began to stream in.

McIntosh led the Springboks to a total of 12 Test victories. He also led the Sharks to four Currie Cup victories in the 1990s and was defeated by the team in two Super Rugby finals.
