Eskom was forced to execute stage 6 load-shedding due to the collapse of a generating unit at the Medupi power facility.

The utility said on Wednesday afternoon that stage 6 will be enforced from 4 p.m. on Wednesday to 5 a.m. on Thursday owing to a shortfall of generation capacity.

It first reported failures at 16,772MW of generating capacity, with scheduled repair at 5,807MW.

Eskom stated that the increased demand following a long weekend, as well as the resumption of schools, had put additional strain on the system.
