On the afternoon of May 8th, 2023, the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) Specialised Task Team was on a routine patrol when they spotted a white VW Polo driving recklessly along Voortrekker road in Kempton Park. What began as a routine traffic stop quickly escalated into a dangerous high-speed chase when the suspects in the Polo removed their rear number plates and attempted to flee.

As the chase continued well into the CBD, the suspects pointed firearms at the pursuing metro vehicle, putting the officers' lives in danger. Fortunately, the EMPD officers were able to stop the vehicle, fatally wounding one suspect and arresting two others. One of the suspects was seriously injured and taken to the hospital under police guard.

Upon investigation, the EMPD found two firearms in the suspects' possession and will conduct further investigations to determine if the firearms were used in the commission of other offences. The suspects will be charged with armed robbery, possession of unlicensed firearms, and reckless and negligent driving.

While on the scene, a complainant came forward and alleged that she was robbed of her cellphone by the same suspects earlier. Two cellphones were recovered from the suspects, one of which was identified as belonging to the woman.

The swift actions of the EMPD Specialised Task Team not only prevented the suspects from causing harm to innocent civilians, but also resulted in the recovery of stolen property and the apprehension of dangerous criminals. The EMPD continues to work tirelessly to ensure the safety and security of the communities they serve.
