Johannesburg,The South African Police Service (SAPS) has launched an investigation into a recent incident on the N1 freeway in Johannesburg, involving members of Deputy President Paul Mashatile's VIP protection team and civilians. The incident, which has raised concerns about the use of force, is currently under scrutiny by the SAPS.
Video footage of the incident, widely shared on social media, captured armed security personnel allegedly assaulting the occupants of a hatchback vehicle. In the footage, the protectors can be seen exiting their blue light vehicle and physically engaging with the two occupants, kicking and stomping them. The incident took place amidst the heavy traffic on the busy national road in Gauteng.
The SAPS confirmed the involvement of their members in the incident, and it has been verified that the personnel were assigned to Deputy President Mashatile's protection detail. In response to the incident, Deputy President Mashatile expressed his disapproval of any unnecessary use of force, particularly against unarmed civilians.
General Fannie Masemola, the National Commissioner of SAPS, has assured a thorough investigation into the incident. He emphasized that members of the SAPS are expected to uphold and protect the fundamental rights of every individual, exercising their powers responsibly and in a controlled manner.

The SAPS management has distanced itself from the conduct depicted in the video, stating that it does not align with the values and code of conduct of the organization. Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, the SAPS national spokesperson, confirmed that the victims involved in the incident have been successfully traced. Deputy President Mashatile has appealed to the public to allow the SAPS the necessary space and time to complete the investigation and take appropriate corrective action. He expressed confidence in the leadership of Minister Bheki Cele and General Masemola in ensuring that the right steps are taken to address the incident.
