On Thursday, August 31, 2023, at approximately 12:10 PM, the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) Eastern Region Task Team Officers intercepted and detained two foreign nationals, aged 33 and 45, who were found in possession of a reported highjacked white Isuzu truck loaded with electronic appliances in the Bapsfontein area.
The EMPD Officers received crucial information from a vehicle tracking company regarding a white Isuzu 8-ton truck that had been reported as highjacked in the Tembisa area. Taking swift action on this information, the officers followed the provided coordinates, leading them to a plot on Christina Street in the Bapsfontein area.
Upon their arrival at the scene, the officers confronted two male suspects—one of Zimbabwean nationality and the other of Mozambican nationality. During the interrogation of the suspects, neither could provide satisfactory explanations regarding the truck and its cargo.
Subsequently, the officers obtained the owner's information from the eNatis database and contacted the owner, who positively identified the cargo as the same that had been in the vehicle at the time of the hijacking.
Among the items recovered in the vehicle were amplifiers, a 32-inch smart plasma TV, speaker boxes, and a signal jammer, with a total estimated value of eight hundred thousand Rands (R800,000).
The recovered items were duly processed and promptly returned to their rightful owner, while the highjacked truck was transported to the Aerton Police pound for further investigation.
The arrested individuals, both in handcuffs, were taken to the Welbekend police station, where they were charged with possession of a signal jammer, possession of a highjacked motor vehicle, and possession of goods suspected to be stolen. They are expected to appear in the Pretoria Magistrate Court in the near future.
The EMPD expresses its gratitude for the collaborative efforts with the tracking company, which played a crucial role in apprehending these criminals within the City.
