Sherika De Armas, a former Miss World contestant from Uruguay, passed away at the age of 26 on October 13. She had been fighting cervical cancer and had undergone chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Her death has left a lasting impact on Uruguay and the world. De Armas was one of the only six 18-year-olds to compete in the 2015 Miss World contest in China. She had always wanted to be a model, whether it was beauty, advertising, or catwalk. She also launched a make-up line and sold hair and personal care products called Shey de Armas Studio. She also devoted her time to the Perez Scremini Foundation, which treats children with cancer.

The World Health Organisation states that cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer in women, with an estimated 570,000 women diagnosed worldwide in 2018 and 311,000 dying from the disease. Effective primary and secondary prevention approaches, such as HPV vaccination and screening for precancerous lesions, are expected to prevent most cervical cancer cases.

In her honor, Miss Universe Uruguay 2022 Carla Romero expressed her gratitude for De Armas' support and the friendships she shared with her.
