South Africa's President Cyril Ramaphosa

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa welcomed the four-day truce between Israel and the Palestinian organisation Hamas on Wednesday. He hoped this arrangement would support efforts to end the war between the two parties.

One of the most well-known voices on the African continent on the horrific conflict between Israel and Hamas, which has been raging for over seven weeks, is Ramaphosa.

Since the time of former President Nelson Mandela, South Africa has been a staunch supporter of Palestinians, comparing their situation to that of its own before the end of apartheid in 1994. Israel objects to the analogy.

"It is my hope that the achievement of this pause will strengthen efforts to achieve an outright end to the current conflict," Ramaphosa said.

He said there needed to be a durable political resolution in the Middle East.
