In response to recent tragedies in Freedom Park, the community gathered for a crucial meeting at Tjovitjo, located next to the BP Garage along the Golden Highway, on Friday afternoon from 4:30 to 18:30. Local law enforcement, including Sergeant Chauke from the Eldorado Park police station, and Councillor Zakes, played vital roles in discussions aimed at addressing growing safety concerns within the community.

The meeting provided a platform for community members to express their concerns about perceived delays in police responses and inadequate resources to combat rising criminal activities. Residents also voiced frustrations about the challenges posed by a single police van attempting to cover the expansive areas of Slovo Park, Eldorado Park, and Freedom Park.

Councillor Zakes, during the meeting, emphasized the importance of community collaboration and discouraged individuals from taking the law into their own hands. The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) was also present to elucidate the legal consequences associated with such actions. The video below gives a gist of what the Councillor touched on:

Sergeant Chauke actively engaged with the community, expressing a willingness to collaborate in the fight against crime. He assured residents that the police were prepared to work together to apprehend criminals and urged the community to report any captures promptly. Sergeant Chauke strongly condemned the recent killings, emphasizing that such actions go against the principles of justice and the law.

During the meeting, a courageous lady shared her experience of being mugged by criminals and reporting the incident to the police. She expressed ongoing fear for her life as she lives near the perpetrators and shivers daily at the sight of them. In response, Sergeant Chauke asked her to open a case, assuring her that the police would conduct a thorough follow-up.

To facilitate communication and swift action, Sergeant Chauke provided a dedicated contact number, (082) 444-3001, directly connecting to the police station. Additionally, he shared his contact number, (082) 563-2649, encouraging residents to call now in case they encounter challenges reaching him through the police station line.

In a proactive move, Councillor Zakes announced plans to allocate time for raids on empty shacks suspected of harboring stolen goods linked to criminals in Tjovitjo. This measure reflects the community's determination to address the root causes of crime.

As the community grapples with recent tragedies, the meeting at Tjovitjo signifies a united front in pursuing concrete measures to enhance safety and security for all residents. The commitment to proactive actions and continuous engagement with relevant authorities, coupled with direct communication channels established by Sergeant Chauke, underscores the resilience of the Freedom Park community in the face of challenges.
