Hlengiwe Bila |
Hlengiwe is not just a talented writer; she is also a qualified journalist and a certified criminal law and forensic investigator. Her writing journey began at an early age when she was growing up in Elim Shirley, Xigodini village, surrounded by literature. Her uncle, an international writer and lecturer at the University of Limpopo, was a major influence on her writing journey.
Although Hlengiwe has explored various fields of writing, it is her work in poetry that has garnered her the most attention. She started writing poetry in primary school and found it to be a means of expressing her emotions. As she grew older, she found herself drawn to storytelling. Her non-fiction writing focuses mostly on herself and the things she has been through.
Hlengiwe's poetry is largely inspired by her pain, and she admits to having a Facebook page where she vents about her pain. For her, poetry is like a friend who does not talk back but is very comforting. She draws inspiration from a variety of different poets and writers, including Tshifhiwa Given Mukwevho, F A Thuketana, and J.M Coetzee.
From 2009 until now, Hlengiwe has written numerous poems, and she has been recognized for her talent in various ways. She was featured in Limpopo Mirror in May 2016, where she was part of a seminar hosted by Timbila Poetry Project for Africa Month. She currently has three stories on Wattpad, titled "It Doesn't Rain In July," "Carrying Abdul," and "Letters for My Heart." Hlengiwe is a non-fiction writer and mostly writes about herself and the things she has been through.
When asked about her future goals, Hlengiwe says that she wants to express herself and be able to express for those who cannot. She hopes to one day tell their stories. Hlengiwe is also interested in branching out into other forms of writing, such as movie writing or novel writing.
Hlengiwe is the founder of the Lend a Rural Girl campaign, aimed at lending a hand to young people in rural communities. The campaign is not just limited to sanitary drives but also hosts seminars for youth development, career guidance, and social development. Although she is still looking for sponsorship, Hlengiwe is dedicated to making a difference in the lives of young people in rural communities.
Hlengiwe is not just a writer; she is also an Instagram Live show host who uses her platform to connect with her audience. She believes that social media is a powerful tool that can be used to bring people together and to inspire change.
