A 33-year-old Mozambican man was arrested for stealing Transnet copper cables worth R80,000 in Machadodorp, Mpumalanga. The suspect was caught by security guards during their daily patrols when they saw a group of people tempering with the cables. The suspects ran away in different directions and managed to apprehend one, leaving behind pieces of copper cables worth R80,000. The suspect was charged with damaging essential infrastructure and is expected to appear in Belfast Magistrates' Court on Wednesday.
A similar incident occurred in Delmas, Mpumalanga, where a security guard was arrested for possession of suspected stolen rolls of copper cables valued at R150,000. The guard was cornered by his supervisor and found in possession of 29 copper cables. Brigadier Selvy Mohlala said that the supervisor was patrolling on the R555 road between Delmas and Ogies when he noticed a Toyota Hilux light delivery vehicle driving off the road. The supervisor approached the driver, who was one of his colleagues and three other occupants who managed to escape. The guard was accosted by his supervisor, and 29 rolls of copper cables worth R150,000 were recovered.
