KIMBERLEY, South Africa - In a recent development, the management of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in the ZF Mgcawu District expressed satisfaction as justice was served with the conviction and sentencing of 43-year-old David Bosman from Rosedale. On 29th September 2023, Bosman was sentenced to 17 years' imprisonment by the Upington Regional Court for the murder of his 43-year-old niece, Elizabeth Bosman.
The tragic incident unfolded on the evening of 13th August 2021 when Elizabeth, who was suffering from an undisclosed mental illness, arrived home in distress, breaking windows within the house where she resided with her family, including the accused.
According to trial evidence, Elizabeth fled when she learned that the police had been contacted. Her uncle, the accused, pursued her and subjected her to a horrifying assault. Eyewitnesses testified that Bosman brutally kicked and dragged Elizabeth for about 200 meters along the street. Tragically, she succumbed to her injuries, and her lifeless body was discovered the following day where she had been left.
Despite the accused's denial of the assault, Detective Sergeant JA Visagie, the investigating officer, was commended for his relentless pursuit of justice. He meticulously followed every lead, gathering compelling evidence that ultimately led to Bosman's conviction.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) lauded Detective Sergeant Visagie's thorough investigation, emphasizing the importance of his diligence in ensuring that justice prevailed in this heartbreaking case. The sentencing serves as a reminder of the commitment of law enforcement agencies to protect vulnerable members of society and hold perpetrators accountable for their actions.
